Quick answer: Iron casting quality inspection is the series of checks that proves a casting’s chemistry, structure, strength, dimensions and soundness before it ships. An iron castings manufacturer with in-house inspection in India, such as Raimac Technocast, runs seven gates from scrap to dispatch. Ask for the report from each gate with your RFQ.

Most buyers agree that a certificate on the wall does not prove a casting is good. The proof is in the tests, and in the reports that travel with each lot. This guide explains the Raimac 7-Gate Inspection Path, shows how to read the results, and lists the documents to request from an iron castings manufacturer with in-house inspection in India. For process basics, see what is iron casting.

What Is Iron Casting Quality Inspection?

Iron casting quality inspection verifies that a casting meets its drawing and material grade. It answers five questions:

  • Chemistry: is the iron the right composition?
  • Structure: is the graphite shape correct for the grade?
  • Strength: do tensile and hardness values meet the grade?
  • Dimensions: does the part match the drawing?
  • Soundness: is it free of leaks, cracks and loose particles?

A casting can pass one question and fail another, so inspection runs in stages instead of as one final check.

The Raimac 7-Gate Inspection Path

The Raimac 7-Gate Inspection Path groups the foundry’s inspection capability into seven checkpoints. Each gate catches a defect that later stages cannot fix.

Gate 2: melt control

Chemistry decides the grade before a mould is poured. Raimac tests all heats of grey and ductile iron on-line on a 16-channel spectrometer and tests the scrap itself before charging. A 450 kW medium frequency induction furnace with two 500 kg crucibles melts the metal. Carbon equivalent is tracked because it influences how the iron solidifies and shrinks.

Gate 3: sand and core control

Gas porosity often starts in the mould. Raimac runs an automatic sand plant rated at 20 MT per hour, with online sand testing by an RTC unit. Shell sand is tested on seven properties, including hot tensile strength, gas evolution and stick point. Green sand is tested for tensile strength, permeability, compatibility, moisture and clay content.

Gate 4: proving the grade

Grade names carry numbers. Ductile iron 500-7 means a minimum tensile strength of 500 MPa and 7% elongation. Grade 400-15 means 400 MPa and 15%. Grade 600-3 means 600 MPa and 3%. Grey iron FG200 to FG350 means a minimum tensile strength of 200 to 350 MPa.

The tensile test method is defined in ISO 6892-1. Graphite shape is classified by visual comparison under ISO 945-1. Hardness alone does not prove ductility, so a ductile iron report should show tensile and microstructure results.

Gate 5: dimensional proof

A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) measures features against the drawing point by point. Blue light scanning captures the whole surface as a 3D map, which suits complex castings with many cores. Raimac lists blue light scanning inspection reports for die and pattern on request. Buyers who need iron castings with CMM and blue light scanning inspection report data should name the critical features and tolerances on the drawing.

Gate 6: internal soundness

A borescope inspects internal surfaces that cannot be seen directly. Millipore testing checks cleanliness by weight or particle size. Leak and pressure testing proves the casting holds fluid. Raimac cites pressure tightness up to 3000 psi, about 207 bar, on multi-core castings with 2-3 mm walls.

What to Request from an Iron Castings Manufacturer with In-House Inspection in India

A ductile iron castings supplier with microstructure and tensile test report capability should provide these five documents. Ask for the same on grey iron jobs:

  1. Chemistry report for each heat.
  2. Tensile and microstructure report for ductile iron grades.
  3. Dimensional report from the CMM or blue light scan for critical features.
  4. Leak or pressure test result where the part holds fluid.
  5. Grade and standard written on the drawing, for example ISO 1083 or IS grades.

Ask the foundry to confirm report formats in writing before you order. Raimac’s team can confirm which reports apply to your drawing.

Inspection for Machined Iron Castings

Machined iron castings with dimensional inspection reports need checks before and after machining. Machining removes the cast skin and can open subsurface porosity, so a part that passed as cast must be inspected again as machined.

Raimac machines in-house on CNC turning centres, vertical machining centres, CNC VTL, HMC, special purpose machines, milling and broaching machines. Casting, machining and measurement sit under one roof, so one team owns the result. See the manufacturing capabilities and the quality assurance page.

ISO 9001 Certified Iron Casting Manufacturer in India: The System Behind the Tests

Raimac holds three certifications from TUV NORD:

  • ISO 9001:2015: quality management. ISO 9001 sets requirements for a quality management system.
  • ISO 14001:2015: environmental management.
  • ISO 45001:2018: occupational health and safety.

Certification shows the system. Part-level reports show the result. Ask for both when you qualify an ISO 9001 certified iron casting manufacturer in India. Ductile iron grades follow the classification in ISO 1083.
